December 2008

Hello, and thanks for checking in. We've been busy getting ready for the holidays. As a matter of fact, I've been wrapping presents this evening. (I've also been working on a new recording project, as well as finishing up a book/CD set, hopefully to be released by mid-2009.)

I enjoyed visiting with many of you at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention in Nashville last summer. The 25th annual convention will be in July 2009. For more info, go to www.chetsociety.com.

We mailed AGW Vol 13 No 4 earlier this month. This issue includes Jerry Reed's First Born; Favorite Reed Intros (from the Better Things in Life album); Raspail in the Morning (a new Dobbins original); and the Christmas favorite Angels We Have Heard On High. (If you're not a subscriber yet, be sure to check the AGW page while you're here.)

The Guitarist Interviews page now includes visits with Nashville studio great Mark Casstevens, legendary fingerstylist Guy Van Duser, renowned sacred and classical guitarist/arranger Rick Foster . . . and me. (Future "vicitms" include my occasional pickin' buddy Stephen Bennett.)

My recording and transcription of Luayne (from the Fingerpickin' CD)is featured in the new issue (#68) of Fingerstyle Guitar magazine.

As you all know, Jerry Reed passed away August 31, 2008, at age 71. It's difficult to find the words to express how I feel about Jerry. He had such a profound influence on my life, and as Chet once said, some of my happiest moments have been spent learning a new Reed tune. Jerry's music has been my constant companion since I was a teenager. (I've carried the lyrics to A Thing Called Love in my billfold since I was 16.) All those years ago, I never dreamed that one day I would not only meet him and get to spend time with him, but also write two books on his music. The last time I spoke with Jerry, he told me "Keep on pickin', son." . . . I plan on taking his advice. Thanks, Jerry, for all the great music.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and all the best to you in 2009!
